Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay immediately fell in love after showing her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to promote activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to make use of the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house of a particular member of the Jury. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was given and deciding to go after an interest in public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a new publicist at a studio. From this position she started her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
